The sky wept around him and into his unsipped tea, but Ukitake didn’t mind.
Raindrops pelted the vibrant plants in the garden, but Ukitake didn’t notice.
The shoulders of his haori were soaking, but Ukitake didn’t feel it.
Shiba Kaien was dead, and although he knew there was no way to save the man, Ukitake still felt his chest twinge. A sensation that had nothing to do with his latest attack. Kaien. Kaien…
He wrapped both his hands around the teacup and watched the rain ripple in the tea. He knew he wasn’t the only one suffering, wasn’t the only one looking on this day with apathy. One lost his blood that night, but another was stained with the blood that may never be scoured from the skin. And Ukitake could only watch.
That wasn’t enough. One day, he would walk out into the sun with no regrets and his friends would smile without holding back.
One day. Someday.
As he looked into the teacup, he saw a red shadow hover over it.
The rain no longer touched him.
She was by his side, her bright parasol raised above his height, but the rain fell on Unohana now. They looked at each other, life and death echoed in each others’ eyes. Ukitake opened his mouth, every intention of thanking her evident on the rest of his face, but then he stopped.
The corners of her lips had curled up the tiniest bit. Such a sad smile.
The rain drenched her hair and dripped off the end of her braid. Ukitake gently pulled her in with his free hand, under the parasol. There was no need for anyone to stand alone in the rain.

Ah, but this is heartrending, tender and mourningful. I love that Unohana is there to lend a shoulder to him. She understands without words what he is feeling, and it is lovely.
Wonderful!

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was trying to get a mixture of a hopeless and yet yearning vibe from Ukitake, so I hope it worked. And Unohana is just amazing, so she needed to be included, too.

Beyond that, the detail is really splendid, especially "...the rain drenched her hair and dripped off the end of her braid...". The ending sentence is a good summary of the entire fic.

I'm glad you think so, about the last sentence. I struggled with that a bit so it wouldn't sound too cheesy, but your comment is reassuring! I'm glad you enjoyed!

Sad, but ultimately uplifting, all with a quiet, understated charm. ♥

I was hoping for the reader to go away with that kind of feeling and I'm glad you experienced it. And charm? Now you flatter me. XD
Thanks again, that means a lot!
