And what got you into fanfiction to begin with?
I was on theforce.net hanging around the fanfiction section and I saw a challenge for writing Anakin and Padme's first kiss. I thought that was kind of cool, so I wrote a little diddy about it, but without submission. The challenge had passed, I wasn't a member, and I'm pretty sure I thought the fic wasn't that great. But I never looked back. Fanfiction is such a huge part of my life now.
I see. So what kind of fanfiction do you like to write?
I'll write pretty much anything that catches my fancy. I usually stick to angst or fluff, though, but I have ventured into pretty raw stuff and even wrote a smut piece. I like to experiment. Nothing is really too weird for me *well, slash, but that's a different matter altogether* so if I get a plot idea, I'll go with it. One shots are the most fun for me to write. I don't have to keep reminding myself to post a new chapter or something, I can just whip up a story, look over it a bit, and post it. Very satisfying.
Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the aspects of writing you struggle most with?
I used to find it pretty easy. But now that I'm in a creative writing course, I'm finding it's a lot harder than one would expect. There are so many little details you have to pay attention to. And then you can't get too serious because it shows in the writing sometimes. And it's so meticulous and you may have to edit over and over and over again. But it's still such a fun experience that I wouldn't trade for the world.
What I have the most trouble with is probably staying in character. Although I've never had someone tell me that my characters are acting strangely, I feel like I have to reign myself in before I practically insert myself into their shoes. Especially if I'm feeling very hopeless romantic and the characters are no where near that point in the story.
Write a few sentences or so of your favorite pairing or character.
Hoo boy, where to start with the fandoms? Well, I'm feeling FMA right now, so we'll go with that. So I suppose we'll see what happens.
Another bar, another phone call.
Riza sighed as she shrugged on her coat and locked the door to her apartment. The bartended had called five minutes before, nearly begging her to come down to The Thirsty Dragon and drag Mr. Mustang out of there. She had merely answered, "Of course. I'll be there in a few minutes."
When she arrived, she could hear why the bartender wanted to instill peace in his establishment. Before she even walked through the door she could hear off-key, bawdy singing. And the voice above the rest was all too familiar. But she couldn't go back on her word, despite how much she wanted to run away and pretend she didn't have to carry out her current mission.
Inside, she found him at the bar, surrounded by other lonely and pathetic patrons, their singing getting louder and worse by the second. Their mugs of ale sloshed amber liquid everywhere as they swung their arms widely, obviously affected enough to not notice the damage being done. She trudged on and shouldered her way through the unstable men.
"Colonel, it's time you went home."
His singing slurred into silence as he theatrically focused on the woman in front of him. "Oh! Elizabiff! 'Ow nice of ya ta join us!"
"No, Sir, I'm taking you home." And with that, she gently extricated the mug out of his sticky hands and pulled him to his feet, taking most of his weight for him. The bartender gave her a grateful look and set to wiping down the counter. As Riza practically carried Roy out of the bar, she ignored the obnoxious catcalls directed at them. She then maneuvred him into the passenger seat of her car and closed the door.
Riza sighed. It would be a long night.
Okay, so that was longer than a few sentences.
Are there any fanfiction clichés or trends you're sick of or just can't stand?
Slash, characters saying "I love you/I love you too" five minutes into their relationship, um...that's all I can think of now.
Are you guilty of any fanfiction clichés you hate? Or any other ones?
I sometimes make couples embrace romantically much too quickly.
What was the first fandom you wrote for, and do you still like/participate in it?
Star Wars. I still love it, but I haven't written for it in a few years.
Name your OTPs or most frequently written pairings/characters and explain what it is about them that you love to write.
Oh man, sooooo many OTPs. The one I've written the most for is Susan/Caspian from Narnia. I love writing them because there's something about the forbidden romances that really attract me. I also love to write about the Doctor (Doctor Who) because he's such a deep character and almost anything you write can be attributed to one of his incarnations, but there's still something very Doctorish about all of them. Since I'm new to FMA, I haven't written anything about Roy/Riza, Ed/Winry, Al/Mei, or Ling/Ran Fan yet, but I hope to change that soon.
I'm sure there's others that I'm forgetting, but oh well, haha.
What would you call your writing style?
Hm...I suppose I could optimistically call it fresh, but with a thin haze of poetic justice. Although I've been told by my professor that I can be a little too poetic. I'm trying to get more into the real life kind of feel, but without going grunge or something.
Do you read other people’s fanfic? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
I love reading fanfic. I'm not sure what I read the most since I like to mix it up. And I also jump from fandom to fandom, so it's never really consistent.
