Fic - Our Game

Title:  Our Game
Rating:  PG for mild violence
Characters/Pairings: Implied Spike/Julia
Summary:  Spike is watched as he struggles down the Syndicate steps.  Spoilers for Spike's backstory and end of the series.
Disclaimer:  I own nothing.  Except my copy of the Bebop movie.  *Huggles movie to self*
A/N:  This hasn't been beta'd, but I wanted to get a Bebop fic out into the world.

Your steps are taken with such finality and grace, as if you were already here with me and knew it. But I know you better than that. I always did. While your final footsteps on those stairs tell the onlookers that you’re okay with dying, I know the truth behind your faltering. Every step down that you take is a failure for you to keep your body working in your world. You walk slowly, not from pain only, but from a defiance to give into something you can’t understand.

Our ends were never supposed to be this peaceful.

Remember our game, Spike? When we would randomly pull out our finger guns and see who could shoot the other first? Despite your skill in gunslinging, do you remember how I always seemed to sneak up on you?

The first time. We were walking in the park after your acceptance into the Syndicate and we were in public together, without worries of who saw us. Vicious was off-planet, remember? You were so carefree and young in those days, Spike. Constantly you babbled to me about how excited you were to have friends and a place to belong.

And I looked around to see if anyone would see my prank. “Spike?” I asked quietly. You turned around, as I expected and I held up my index finger and thumb toward you. “Bang.” Instead of rolling your eyes and rebuking me on my childish behavior, as Vicious would have done, you gasped and held your invisible wound closed with your sinewy hands. In those days, you always fell on your back, your abnormally long legs raised into the air for a moment before falling back to earth with a slight tremor.

Though we never said it aloud, we came to an understanding that our deaths would be as melodramatic as our morbid game.

And here you are, almost soundlessly making your way closer to the end of your life.

How did this happen?

I can only watch as you trudge on, barely anything left inside that broken shell of the man I once knew. I want to slip under one of your arms, help you make it to the bottom of the stairs…

But I can’t, Spike. Like so often in our screwed-up relationship, I’m not there for you when you need me the most. I take on my normal role as the girl you knew who ran away, never to be seen again. But I never forgot you and how we could rule the world when we were together. We were a team, Spike. A perfect team in imperfect times.

And Spike? I just wanted to tell you, I –

“Bang.”

Oh…you got me.

Awwww...that's a bittersweet little story. One of these days I'll see this show again, not as a piecemeal thing but actually sit and watch it and watch the movies, too.

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This show is quite possibly my favorite anime ever. Of course, I am biased since it's the first one I watched, lol. But yeah, definitely find the time to watch it again, it's so worth your time!

And thanks for reading this! I know it's not happy, but I'm glad you liked it!

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I like Cowboy Bebop (I sekritly want to someday have a horse to name that). I also like its bastard love child, Samurai Champloo.

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, bastard love child. Great way to describe it! I love Champloo possibly as much as Bebop. In fact, the person who introduced both shows to me (believe it or not, I'm not an anime fan...except for the six I've watched) said that Mugen could be described as Syndicate-era Spike. And I can totally see it.

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Considering so many people (producers/writers/et al) from Bebop were involved in Champloo...

I think [livejournal.com profile] silvrethorn, who adores Champloo, first referred to it as the 'bastard love child' of Bebop; she has tons of great phrases.

I really wanna know what else Shinichiro Watanabe has directed, if anything, because he did fantastically on these two.

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose I could undo my bout of laziness then, lol.

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, be lazy. Read fic. *giggles*

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, too late! I wiki'd and apparently the only other anime he did (well, co-directed) was Macross Plus. No idea if I'm interested or not.

As for reading fic, this is always a grand idea. Though I should write some more. My Narnia plot bunnies are going to rebel soon if I don't do something about it.

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ooo, Narnia fic! I wish I could write Narnia....

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, just try it one day! I'm not that great at it, but I've written soooo many Susan/Caspian pieces (woohoo movie!canon!). You're more than welcome to read them if you get bored enough, lol.

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
*snicker* I've always sort of paired Lucy and Caspian...when I've paired anyone (from the books).

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
No way! I totally did that when I read Voyage of the Dawn Treader! But then I saw the Prince Caspian movie and was swayed...and I am not ashamed to say it was all Ben Barnes' fault.

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
hahaha, I've heard that about him.

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
LoL, I'm a huge fan! Even have his autograph.

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
*grins* I have...lots of autographs. Somewhere. *eyes house that still needs to be unpacked*

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I need to get more. I love having bragging rights, lol.

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2008-12-31 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahah...I just hope that all of them didn't get left in Florida during the big move. There are things I KNOW I packed that I can't find.

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh noes! I hope you find all of them!

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
There are still boxes that need emptying. *nods* Hopefully, the missing stuff will be located.

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
They will be, I've got a good feeling. :D

[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. I'll take your word for it. *grins*

Oh, this is so lovely and bittersweet. I love how you managed to weave a piece of Spike and Julia's history into Spike's final moments, and Spike's response is just so...well, Spike.

"A perfect team in imperfect times." YES. That so succinctly describes their relationship! Perfect!

Very nicely done, I love it.

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for reading and I'm glad you enjoyed this!

That's funny because now that I think about it again (I wrote this a few months ago), I'm not sure if I agree with Julia, lol. But then Julia and I aren't exactly similar, so that could explain it. I just always see Spike and Julia as a couple that wanted to work, but never could because of so many external variables acting against them. And now I'm speaking in math terms, so I'm going to stop on that bit.

Again, I'm glad you love it and I can't wait to write more! This fandom is a constant source of inspiration.

[identity profile] i-am-a-rose-4.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose, given that there is so much room for interpretation, it just really depends on how one sees the relationship in the first place. I know there are a lot of Julia-haters out there, for one reason or another, but I always saw their relationship as a relationship where they were probably wonderful together, but as you said, there were so many factors that worked against them that they could never really live the relationship out to its fullest extent.

Now my mind is churning with the different possibilities/outcomes/factors in a Spike/Julia relationship. It's so fascinating because it's really actually pretty open for interpretation...

Anyway, I enjoyed this. Hope you write more soon! :)

[identity profile] dancing-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
See, this is what I love about the whole show. Nothing is really, actually, concrete. One tiny, seemingly insignificant thing could happen and thus change the outcome for everyone. And, of course, it gets the audience really thinking about everything. So awesome.

About Julia, I heard that there's a theory out there somewhere (and this may be subconsciously influencing me) that Julia never loved Spike. Now THAT is something to get the wheels turning.

I will definitely be writing more once a plot bunny bites. And when my brain learns to balance all my fandom going-ons.
