A/N:  Written for Week 48 at bleach_contest

She was leaving, departing for the unknown horrors of Hueco Mundo.

Ukitake’s eyes remained wide as he focused on the floorboards, barely hearing his name among the others who would fight the traitor, Aizen. He knew the choice was reasonable. She was the best healer they had.

But…she was the best. And she was leaving.

Ukitake looked to the other row of captains, instantly seeking her form. He drank in her figure, all soft lines masking her strong resolve. But she looked at peace with her eyes closed and no outward worry evident upon her brow. Ukitake yearned to feel that peace.

Yamamoto’s voice broke in to dismiss them all. Ukitake took an intake of breath as she opened her eyes and met his own, calmness in her gaze, before flash-stepping away.

He bowed his head and closed his eyes. Be safe, Retsu-san.

And then he, too, left.

This is so telling. We *know* she's one of the strongest, and yet she *is* sent to HM, rather than defending the pillars. It's always struck me as odd, so it's interesting to see you focus on this choice as the setting for such a light, yet emotionally charged, meeting of thoughts.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I also thought it was interesting how Yamamoto chose her to go to HM this time, but during Turn Back the Pendulum, he wanted her to stay behind. Maybe her strength has improved even more over the years or he knew that everyone would really need her help because she's so strong.

Also, since I'm an Ukitake/Unohana fan, I thought it would be interesting to see her departure through his eyes and how that would affect him.

Ukitake/Unohana isn't my favorite, but I do like it, and I very much enjoyed yours.

I do like the pairing- Jyuu is my favorite character and Unohana is one of my favorite women. It's just not my favorite of the pairings. It's pretty up there, though! It doesn't that there are so few good writers for them... *pokes you to write more*

I understand you. My problem with fandoms in which I ship over three pairings (such as Bleach) is that I rotate them in order of favorites. Right now, I'm not sure what my fave Bleach pairing is, haha.

But yes, I plan on writing more Ukitake/Unohana, or just anything with Ukitake in it in general. Unfortunately with classes getting more demanding, I don't have as much time as I wish I did to work on fic in more detail. But I'm glad you're enjoying!

Anyway, so what are some of your other favorite pairings? Bleach has so many great character, I have like a zillion ships too. Haha. And I totally understand about the work... its a lot of the reason I'm so behind and confused about my comments... ^_^;;

IchiHime, RenRuki, Byakuya/Hisana, Shuuhei/Rangiku, a bit of HitsuHina, Shunsui/Nanao, a bit of Urahara/Yoruichi, Kaien/Miyako, well-written UlquiHime...

Good heavens, that's a lot. But yeah, I'm a het girl and support pretty much anything canon, but with Bleach maybe two of these are really canon, so hooray for crack! I think I'd also go for anything het including Aizen. Just because he's an insanely awesome antagonist. XD
