Fic - The Day Is Gone
Title: The Day Is Gone
Rating: G
Characters: Ukitake Jyuushirou (Bleach) and Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts)
Summary: Quite simply, a quiet bromantic moment.
Disclaimer: I am not Kubo Tite or Square Enix. If I were, I wouldn't be writing fic about my own characters. I do like to borrow them for sometorture fun, though.
A/N: Written for
raistlynn because our characters are becoming BFFs at the RP
adstringendum and I needed to show some more love for them. And just write. I haven't written since LAST JUNE. Also, the title is taken from the song "Sunshine" by All-American Rejects.
The world was finally warm again, even now at sunset. Rays of the setting sun reached as far as they could, trying to bring light to even the deepest shadows of the city. It was a futile attempt, but glorious, nonetheless. There was always tomorrow, one could say, but in Adstringendum, even that assumption could be terribly wrong.
None of this passed through Ukitake’s mind, though. He stood outside of the house, looking up at the sky, painted with the colors of day’s end. He seemed to always find something positive, no matter what world claimed him. And tonight, the sky was his silver lining to everything.
Until he sensed a spike in someone’s spiritual presence. His eyes fell closed in concentration. He knew that presence. It wasn’t a Shinigami, Ukitake could feel that right away. Humans didn’t have reiatsu, but something similar. He had befriended a few that he could sense by this presence alone, and this particular one was the most interesting to him.
Squall.
The younger man didn’t seem to be in danger, but something was…different. Focusing more, Ukitake gained a general idea of where Squall was and followed his feeling. He wasn’t far, at least, so Ukitake didn’t rush to his location. Besides, it was still such a lovely day outside and the Shinigami never tired of good days.
He approached the Great Wall separating this part of the city from the Wastelands and saw Squall sitting on some rubble in a break in the wall, facing the Wastelands. Ukitake couldn’t see his face, but his slouched posture and fluctuating presence spoke volumes. He was troubled. Ukitake stood still, not announcing himself yet and not disturbing the other man’s privacy. It never ended well when you meddled in a storm’s affairs.
And so they stayed like this for a few minutes, two men facing the retreating sun. A storm not quite ready to break and a soul able to withstand the rain.
Then the moment was broken as Squall raised his head and faced Ukitake. His face was impossible to read, silhouetted as it was. “Hey,” he said, then turned back around. The Shinigami gave him a few moments to say more, but there was only silence.
Ukitake carefully made his way to the bottom of the rubble and sat on some of the sturdier looking blocks. He nodded up at Squall, offering a gentle smile before looking out over the last rays of sunlight.
There wouldn’t be a storm to follow the peace of the day.
