Title: Halcyon Days

Summary: Byakuya witnesses a sunlit moment between youths.

A/N: Written for week 51 “Rukia” at bleach_contest. Also, this isn’t beta-read, so all mistakes are mine.
Byakuya treasured these peaceful days spent at the Kuchiki manor. As his brush glided across the paper, he could look out the window and watch the breeze rustle the plum blossoms. It was quiet here. Byakuya closed his eyes and found comfort in the silence.
Until a high-pitched shriek rang out from the courtyard.
With every nerve on the defense, he hurried to the window. He sighed when he saw the cause of the ruckus. Below was Rukia, trying to escape the tickling hands of a red-haired, tattooed menace. He knew his fukutaichou was a childhood friend of Rukia’s, but there was no excuse for childish behavior in his house, inside or out.
The urge to reprimand the two was soon crushed by memories of laughter with a woman long gone. He averted his eyes and let the giggles continue. How long had it been since he’d seen Rukia smile so openly like that? As her brother, Byakuya knew it was up to him to ensure her happiness.
He would even be willing to let Renji stick around, no matter how impulsive and rash the man was. And loud. Byakuya wrinkled his nose at that last thought.
But when he realized he could hear the breeze again, he turned his attention back to Rukia and Renji. The man’s long hair was freed from its tie now and Rukia grinned, proudly displaying the string. But Renji didn’t seem to be bothered by this fact.
Byakuya watched as the man stepped closer to the girl and tucked her hair behind one ear. Rukia’s grin slowly disappeared and her fingers relaxed, unknowingly dropping the string. As Renji angled his head toward hers, Byakuya looked away. He should stop them.
But Rukia was happy and Byakuya would let her smile in the sun.
